SEEKING SALMON AND TROUT IN KODIAK, ALASKA

By Ted Mayhew

Stalking Silver Salmon in gin clear mountain creeks, jigging for Halibut, fighting Dolly Varden Trout, or trolling for King Salmon in a beautiful snow capped mountain setting is a typical day at Larry Jarrett’s Kodiak Adventure lodge.

A few of us are leaving Friday Sept. 14 to fly to Anchorage, overnight and on to Kodiak, where we change to a Seahawk Air’s big, sturdy six passenger Otter seaplane for a 30 minute scenic flight to the Lodge. We fish every day and leave the following Saturday flying back to Anchorage and connect to an overnight flight back to Florida arriving Sunday afternoon Sept. 23. This is the week when the Fighting Silver Salmon spawn should be at its peak.

The lodge is located at the end of Kiluda Bay, a saltwater bay that leads to the ocean. The lodge is modern and very comfortable. The food is outstanding and plenty of it. There are three guestrooms with a private bath, shower and toilet that actually flushes. Gee we can’t even rough it in the wilderness any more... Our rooms and dining area have large picture windows that overlook the bay and mountains. We may see Killer Whales and Seals while we eat. Jarrett has a single side band radio and a satellite telephone should we need them to reach Kodiak.

The price is $2,795 for the seaplane, lodge, food, guides every day and is all-inclusive, except for a $30 fishing license, airfare to Anchorage and Kodiak, and an overnight in Anchorage.

A typical day starts with a big breakfast and we leave on one of Jarrett’s boats at about 8:30 a.m. for one of the mountain streams. Wearing waders or hip boots we walk upstream on the banks and in the water, which averages about two feet deep, until we see the Salmon and Dolly Varden. Some times we have to go as far as two hundred feet before we can catch fish. The water is crystal clear with a flowing current. Using streamers, or poppers we should catch a LOT of Salmon. The silvers are hard fighters and frequent jumpers. We will have a lot of fun!

As a bonus, the wildlife is fascinating. We will see Eagles, black tail Deer, perhaps Mountain Goats and the great Kodiak Brown Bear.

Jarrett serves a shore lunch daily, which features naturally fresh fish with veggies, bread and cookies. After lunch we may fish in the bay by trolling or jigging. Halibut is the primary catch along with Rock Bass and others. The bonus here is the Whales. It is possible we will be close enough to the Whales to smell their breath! Perhaps we will see killer Whales, Eagles, Deer and Mountain Goats on the shore and many different kinds of ducks, geese and sea birds. Every day is an adventure with new sights and experiences for us Southerners.
