A recent "research" trip opened my eyes
to the wide range of options available to the discriminating
flyfisher who wants to chase bonefish (and other flats quarry) in
the Bahamas. You can spend a modest amount and have great
opportunities, or you can spend some more and be pampered in the
process.
Ninety percent of bonefishing is done on fly.
Guides are very knowledge, with 8-weight outfits the standard
tackle; bring plenty of Crazy Charlies, Gotchas (tan and gold are
good), Cook's Critters and crab patterns.
Spring is the prime season, so prices are more
expensive. The lodges offer reduced rates in the summer and fall
with weather comparable to here and hungry fish. Although you can
fly over and stay in reasonable hotels and fish with freelance
guides cheaply, it's a hit or miss proposition (guides won't show,
aren't qualified, etc.). I'd highly recommend established
operations. Unless otherwise indicated, all camps operate 16-foot
Dolphin Super Skiffs with two anglers and guide, and rates are based
on double occupancy, per person. Here's a sampling of what I found
and contact information:
