In Search of Silver Ghosts

By Capt. Dave Lear

(May 1999)

A recent "research" trip opened my eyes to the wide range of options available to the discriminating flyfisher who wants to chase bonefish (and other flats quarry) in the Bahamas. You can spend a modest amount and have great opportunities, or you can spend some more and be pampered in the process.

Ninety percent of bonefishing is done on fly. Guides are very knowledge, with 8-weight outfits the standard tackle; bring plenty of Crazy Charlies, Gotchas (tan and gold are good), Cook's Critters and crab patterns.

Spring is the prime season, so prices are more expensive. The lodges offer reduced rates in the summer and fall with weather comparable to here and hungry fish. Although you can fly over and stay in reasonable hotels and fish with freelance guides cheaply, it's a hit or miss proposition (guides won't show, aren't qualified, etc.). I'd highly recommend established operations. Unless otherwise indicated, all camps operate 16-foot Dolphin Super Skiffs with two anglers and guide, and rates are based on double occupancy, per person. Here's a sampling of what I found and contact information:

North Riding Point Club, Grand Bahama Island, (242) 353-4250

3-day package (3 nights, 2 1/2 days fishing) …………………………….. $1,380
7-day package (7 nights, 6 1/2 days fishing) ……………………………..$3,070
(All meals and drinks included)

Comments: This is a newer complete club with excellent facilities, staff and guides. Fish the north side of Grand Bahama Island in mangrove lagoons and tidal creeks. Very pristine and remote. Fish average 5-6 pounds, with tailers and small schools. Some tarpon and permit at times. Gambling at the casino and shopping are "non-angling options".

Deep Water Cay Club, Grand Bahama Island (954) 359-0488

3-nights, 2 1/2 days fishing …...… $1200
7-nights, 6 1/2 days fishing …..….$2590
Air service from Ft. Lauderdale (4-pax min.)………………………………..$148
(All drinks and meals included)

Web site: www.spav.com/progc/deepwatercay

Comments: This is the oldest club on the island with excellent reviews from a number of publications. Fish the east end within an exclusive 250-square-mile zone. Good numbers of bones and large permit--the club record is 46 pounds.

Heritage Bonefish Club, Greater Abaco, Causarina Point (242) 366-2150

4-night, 3 days fishing …… $1170
7-night, 6 days fishing……..$1975

web site: www.oii.net/different

Comments: Ecotourism resort with colorful host and knowledgeable British Loyalist guides. Fish the west coast in the Marls or east on Cherokee flats. Wade fishing along the beach. Nearby reef. Lots of fish, 5-7 pound average. Pristine area. Complete package with meals and great lunches on the boat.

Bonefishing Paradise, Sandy Point, Abaco (242) 366-4119

Pete & Gay Guest House
4 nights, 3 full days fishing ………..$954
7 nights, 6 days fishing ...………. $1712

Comments: Small fishing village. Tons of fish with sheltered areas so you can always get out of the wind. Nearby islands with predictable runs of permit. Different boats depending on the guide. Meals included.

Club, Cargill Creek (242) 368-5167

4 nights, 3 days …………………. $1185
7 nights, 6 days ……...…………. $2205

Comments: Well-established club. Good guides. Lots of fish (saw 2,500 on a flat 5 miles from lodge).
Bigger fish on the average. Comfortable rooms. Meals included.

Small Hope Bay Lodge, Fresh Creek, Andros (800) 223-6961

8 days, 7 nights (package w/out fishing) …………………………………...$1225
Flights from Ft. Lauderdale …..…...$220

Comments: Family all inclusive ecotourism lodge. Stay in individual cottages on the beach. Snorkling, diving, nature hikes, swim with dolphins. Lots of activities for the non-angler, kids. Short run to third largest barrier reef in the world. Bonefishing and deep sea flyfishing available. Bonefish charters with local guides: $200 for half day; $325 for full.

Kamalame Cay, (northernmost point of Andros Island)(800) 245-1950

4 night, 3 day fishing ……………..$1930
7 night, 6 day …………………….$3160

Comments: New luxury private island resort. Beautiful rooms and gourmet meals, drinks included. Fish the North Bight or remote NW side of island. Maverick skiffs. 9-10 pound bones not uncommon. Fall thru mid-March duck hunting also available. Booking thru Frontiers.
